ANPAO — THE DAYBREAK
July-June, 1922
THE DAYBREAK
June-July, 1922
Pray often, and yon shall pray oftener.
No Atonement is possible without the In-
carnation. The Son of God had to come and
make Himself one with us before anything He
did could possibly affect our standing at all.
He made Himself cne with us — our elder
Brother — or else He could not have made any
propitiation for our fallen race. If we had no
Incarnation we should have had no Atone-
ment for sin. It would have been impossi-
ble. — The Bishop of London.
Chnrch Will Sing Hymn Every Sunday
Trinity Church of Boston has a new idea.
It proposes to have a favorite hymn which it
will sing on all occasions. The following
note in the parish paper will explain: “ ‘How
Firm a Foundation, Ye Saints of the Lord,’
is to be sung by the Trinity congregation for
the next three months, or until it is sung full
voiced, with confidence, and without the book.
If the Kiwanis Club can have a good tune with
‘Old McDonald Had a Farm,’ and the Rotary
Club can wax enthusiastic over ‘Today Is
Monday,’ or ‘Lizzy Jane,’ and sing them
every time they meet, worshippers at Trinity
Church will sing such hymns as ‘How Firm a
Foundation’ till they shake the shingles of
the roof, and break the hearts of doubters on
our Christ. Lend a hand. Help sing. All
the great congregation needs is a chance to
smg. They shall have it at Trinity Church.”
Laymen’* Missionary Movement to Resume
The outlook is for a resumption of the ac-
tivities of the Laymen’s Missionary Move-
ment. Quiescents since the inauguration of
the Interchurch World Movement, in order to
cause that organization no embrrassment in
undertaking the large task which it had set it-
self to do, the time now seems ripe for renew-
ing the activities at that time laid aside.
With this conviction, a group of laymen in

ence in Chicago, May 3 and 4, for the purpose
of facing frankly the- present situation in or-
der to ascertain the mind of the laymen of
Porte s taut ism with reference to the part they
want to take in the type of work which the
Laymen’s Missionary Movement inaugurated
and carried on so efficiently for so many years.
The conference was strictly unofficial and
self-entertaining. The program called for
the reviewing of the present missionary situ-
ation, the considering of the increasing need
for unofficial and friendly association in the
missionary work of the Church which affords
opportunity for the cultivation of a spiritual
co-operation among Christian forces, particu-
larly in respect to the development of mis-
sionary vision and purpose, and the ascertain-
ing quite definitely the policies on the basis
of which the Laymen’s Missionary Movement
may be of the widest and greatest service.
Educational Secretary Keeping Busy
St. John’s Parish (the Rev. William T. Da-
kin, rector), Savannah, Ga., has recently or-
ganized all of its group work under the Church
School Service League. The Rev. W. A. Jon-
nard, assistant rector, Savannah, Ua., who is
the educational secretary of the diocese, is in
charge of the young people’s work, and di-
rector of the League. A gronp of young peo-
ple holds itself in readiness at the call of Mr.
Jonnard, and is assisting him in the work for
the province of Sewanee of which Mr. Jon-
n'ard is field worker, by helping in his office.
As parish work, they fold and wrap the par-
ish allotment of The Church at Work.
Indians in Public Schools
Under a new interpretation, children of In-
dian parents in South Dakota are entitled to
education in the public schools of the state
at government expense where their parents
have one-fourth or more Indian blood. This
will affect quite a number of pupils in the
Rosebud and other sections where Indians re-
side and would seem to be a wise decision
since in numerous instances the public schools
are closer than the government Indian schools
to the homes of the Indians.
If we are ever to assimilate the American
Indian with the ideals and customs of the
white race, admitting them to the public
schools this would appear to be an excellent
way to bring it about. Anyone familiar with
the history of the Indian must feel that the
whites owes them at least a full opportunity to
develop and where better than in democratic
school system can this be promoted? — Cap-
ital Journal, Pierre, So. Dak.
American Indians at Work
A movement that should make strong ap-
peal to popular interest and support is the
American Indian Arts and Crafts Foundation
with headquarters in Washington. Its pur-
pose is to help the Indians to help themselves.
To this end, it is planned to establish a new
sort of ‘-industrial center” on or near the In-
dian reservations. The center will restore and
encourage the old native arts and crafts of the
Indian , while introducing modern work of com-
mercial value for Indians of mixed blood.
Commissioner Charles H. Burke, of the
Bureau of Indian Affairs, is chairman of the
advisory committee of the foundation. He
declares that there is no greater need of the
Indians today than the opportunity for self-
expression along the lines proposed. Under
the leadership of a bright and capable young
woman we hope that much may be done to-
ward helping the Indians to become self-
supporting and so to prepare them for citizen-
ship. In a letter to the Dearborn Independent,
this trained and enterprising Indian maiden
remarks pa ren theti cally: f ‘The Indian h as not
had much of a chance here in his own native
land.”
While we are calling for justice in behalf
of all the peoples of the ends of the earth,
may we not stop and think about justice
at home? — Dearborn Independent, Detroit
Mich.
Discussion of Coadjutor for Massachusetts
About 150 were present at an informal gath-
ering last weex to consider favorable men for
the Bishop Coadjutor for Massachusetts. The
Rev. Charles L. Slattery, D. D., rector of Grace
Church, New Yoak City, received the largest
number of clerical lay Votes. Rev. Daurens
MacLure. rector of Grace Church, Newton,
presided, The eligibility of Dr. Slattery was
championed by the Rev. Philo W. Sprague,
of St. John’s Church, Chailestown.
There was a fairly large attendance of
clergymen and laymen. Dr. Slattery’s vote
was forty, twenty-nine of which were cast by

TO ALL AMERICAN CITIZENS :
We call your attention to the following
significant facts:
First: The Armenians were one of the Allies
in the late war, and fought for its ideals.
Second: In consequence of rheir loyalty, they
suffered untold persecutions, almost to the
verge of annihilation.
Third: The Allies as well as our own country
pledged them a safe area for themselves
and their children, and they have a right
to expect nothing less.
Fourth: The American public has given mil-
lions of dollars to save the remnant of this
shattered race, in confidence that they will
be given a protected home.
Fifth: This remarkable response to a nation’s
need will be lost if these promises are not
fulfilled.
Sixth: The Allied Powers are preparing a
Treaty with the Turkish Nationalists which
threatens to return the Armenians to unre-
stricted Turkish control.
Seventh: Responsibility for protecting the Ar-
menians has been referred to the League of
Nations.
Eighth: America cannot escape her responsi-
bility upon the ground of non -membership
in The League. Our vast relief contribu-
tions — the cause of humanity — and our own
moral welfare, demand not expressions of
sympathy, but action.
OUR APPEAL
Whoever you are — and wherever you reside, we
urge npon you to take immediately some or all
of the following steps, in case you feel stirred
by the critical nature of the situation.
First: Write at once upon your official paper
to one or more members of Congress from
your state.
Second: Write to both of the Senators from
your state, because personal letters show a
deeper interest than do petitions and reso-
1 ntion g
Third: Write to every member of Congress
and the Senate whom you know personally.
Fourth: Secure resolutions from churches and
assemblies of men and women petitioning
Congress to act for the protection of these
people.
Modernism Strong in English Church
The continued demand for the trial and ex-
pulsion of the various modernist leaders in
the Church of England is evidence that these
modernists are making a deep impression
upon the Church. The ninth conference of
modern Churchmen will be held at Oxford
August 21-28. At this time the subject to be
considered will be “Is Christianity the World

Indian Children Out of School:—
It is very regrettable that there are still
20.869 Indian children who are elegible for
school, but are not in attendance. In South
Dakota alone-,- there are 794 such children
who ought to be, but are not in school.

Pensions for Indian Scouts who served in
Indian wars: —
The commissioner draws attention to th©
act of March 4, 1917, saying that many scouts
and their widows have made claim for pensions
under this act’ and many have been awarded
pensions by reason of their scout service. In-
dians who have claim under the pensions act
are given every assistance in the preparation
and presentation of the claims.
State Bonuses for Indian Soldiers
The attorney general of the State of New
York has handed down an opinion according to
which Indian soldiers of that state, otherwise
qualified, are entitled to the bonus. This no-
doubt, applies as well to Indian soldiers m other
states which have enacted similar legislation.
